LIFE SCIENCE- Class Timeline

Here you will find a brief overview of what is going on month-by-month.

AUGUST

INTRO/SAFETY: This is a brief unit that introduces the students to science and the safetly of science.

SEPTEMBER

METRICS: A one-week unit that introduces mass, volume and density through fun-filled labs.

ECOLOGY: A four-week unit about the interaction of organisms and their environment. 

Students will view videos picturing various ecological environments, learn the various ecological cycles, predator/prey relationships, and complete an ecology benchmark using their knowledge of a food web.

OCTOBER

BIOCHEMISTRY:  A two-week unit that studies the chemistry of living things. 

During this unit, students will learn about proteins, carbohydrates, nucleic acids, lipds, and the body's fuel (ATP).  They will also learn basic element bonding which will help prepare them for their future science classes. 

NOVEMBER

CELLS: A five-week unit that studies cells.  During this unit, students will learn about the various organelles found within all cells. 

DECEMBER

SCIENCE INQUIRY : 7th grade students will have their first opportunity to pass the Douglas County School District's Science Competency for High School Graduation.

GENETICS : A four-week unit that studies heredity.  Here students will leave this unit with an understandng of DNA, genes, and heredity.


JANUARY

CLASSIFICATION:  This is our longest unit at 10 weeks.  During this unit, students will learn how all living things on earth are classified into various kingdoms, phylums, classes, orders, families, genus, and species.While learning about invertebrates, students will have the opportunity to dissect an earthworm.  While learning about vertebrates, students will have the opportunity to dissect a frog. 

This is a very exciting and fun unit!

APRIL

EVOLUTION: During this 2-week unit we take a scientific approach to evolution.  Students will review fossil records, and work on an Internet project to better understand this ever changing science. 

MAY

PHYSIOLOGY: A three week unit where we study tthe human body.  Here, students will learn how the body is organized into various systems and how those systems work together to keep the body working. 

JUNE

SEX ED : A two-week unit using Douglas County School District's approved Sexual Education curriculum and focusing on abstinence.
